Facce da straniero

Foreign faces is an overview and analysis of 30 years of news coverage on foreign immigration in Italian photojournalism. The headlines, the recurring words and the images composing the storytelling were aimed to provide a description of the choices that marked the media’s perspective on migration. We detected some discontinuity in news reports and tried to unveil the role played by photography in visually highlighting or contrasting the most common representations of immigrants from 1980 through today. Which connotations have the images of successful foreigners in the political debate conveyed by the press? And the images of police checks? And those of poverty and marginalization? How is racism represented on a picture? What kind of images are used to bring up organised crime with foreign components? How did photojournalism tell the stories of female migrations and those of the “other” religions? Looking at the last section of this exhibition, which is dedicated to photos isolated from their natural context, i.e. the page, one cannot help but grasp the complexity of the message conveyed by the images and conversely realise the extent to which journalism has given a name and a label to all that is visible to the eye. And a doubt assails us, in 30 years photo-journalism made invisible more things than those it unveiled. This exhibition offers the opportunity to see the significant difference in perspective between different Italian magazines as to the issue of migration, as well as the opportunity to question all over the flaws and the merits of Italian photographic journalisFacce da straniero

Organizzata da FIERI (Forum Internazionale ed Europeo di Ricerche sull'Immigrazione) con la collaborazione del Museo Regionale di Scienze Naturali di Torino, la mostra fotografica illustra, con una rappresentazione fotogiornalistica dedicata al fenomeno dell'immigrazione in Italia negli ultimi tre decenni, l'esito della ricerca "Lo sguardo sull'altro" realizzata da Fieri nel 2006 che evidenzia come il fotogiornalismo sui settimanali d'attualità illustrati tratti il tema dell'immigrazione in modo riduttivo e semplificatorio.Le immagini della mostra, scattate da fotografi professionisti italiani, sono state scelte per la loro forza espressiva nel veicolare aspetti centrali dell'esperienza migratoria e per i distinti linguaggi fotografici dei quali rappresentano interessanti sintesi.
