A region in the northwest corner of present day Ukraine, Volhynia is one of the oldest and most rural Slavic settlements in Europe. Bordered to Belarus in the North and Poland to the West, the Region's thick forests, flooding marshes and feeble roads make the terrain remote and difficult to access.
Villagers here still rely on the land for survival, picking wild mushrooms, and berries in the forest, growing vegetables on farmers' collective farms, and raising livestock. Cultural traditions linking nature and religion endure, but opportunities for employment remain grim fifteen years after the fall of the Soviet Union, leaving youth with little hope for future security and the elderly with virtual no social services to ease the aging process.
Ironically, some youth in Volhinya have begun to favor the Russian language over Ukranian, even as the proudly preserv Ukrainian traditions.

Regione del nord-ovest dell'Ucraina, la Volinia è uno degli insediamenti slavi più antichi e rurali d'Europa. Confinante a Nord con la Bielorussia e a ovest con la Polonia, le fitte foreste, le paludi a le debole rete stradale la rendono una zona remota e di difficile accesso.
Gli abitanti qui ancora dipendono per la loro sopravvivenza sulla terra, con la raccolta dei funghi, delle bacche nella foresta, coltivando verdure nelle fattorie collettive, e con l'allevamento del bestiame. Le tradizioni sono tutt'oggi fondate su natura e religione, le opportunità di lavoro sono, a quindici anni dalla dissoluzione dell'unione sovietica, scarse, lasciando i giovani con ben poche speranze per il futuro, e gli anziani con la prospettiva di non poter contare sull'assistenza sociale.
Nonostante i giovani portino avanti con orgoglio le proprie tradizioni, alcuni giovani hanno iniziato a usare la lingua russa al posto dell'ucraino.
